How it works

How long should a meta description be?
Aim for roughly 120–158 characters. Below that you're leaving space unused; above ~160 Google often truncates it. Because truncation is by pixel width, the exact cut-off varies — this tool shows the pixel width and previews both desktop and mobile so you can judge it precisely.
Why does Google cut off my description even though it's under 160 characters?
Google measures the rendered pixel width, not the character count. A description full of wide characters (capital W, M, m) can exceed the desktop budget of about 920px before it hits 160 characters. This tester estimates that pixel width and shows where it truncates.
What's the difference between desktop and mobile truncation?
