How progressive taxation works
In a progressive tax system each bracket’s rate applies only to the income within that bracket, not to total income. The brackets stack: the first slice of income is taxed at 0%, the next slice at a low rate, and so on — only the top slice is taxed at the highest rate. This is why crossing into a higher bracket never reduces your overall take-home.
Effective vs marginal rate
Your marginal rate is the rate on your last earned unit of income — the bracket you’re currently in. Your effective rate is total tax ÷ gross income. For tax planning purposes, the marginal rate tells you how much of the next raise you’ll keep; the effective rate tells you your overall tax burden.
