Features

  • Two financial years: FY 2025-26 and FY 2024-25 slabs
  • Age-based old-regime exemption (below 60 / senior / super senior)
  • Section 87A rebate, including new-regime marginal relief
  • Standard deduction of ₹75,000 (new) or ₹50,000 (old)
  • Surcharge on high incomes with marginal relief; 4% cess
  • Expandable slab-wise breakdown plus plain-language insights

Why it Matters

Since the new regime became the default, most salaried Indians have to decide each year whether the old regime's deductions still beat the new regime's lower rates and bigger rebate. Getting it wrong can cost tens of thousands of rupees. Seeing both regimes calculated side by side — with the rebate and cess applied correctly — makes the choice obvious instead of guesswork.

What this tool does

The Income Tax Calculator (India) estimates your income tax under both the new and old regimes for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) and tells you which one leaves more money in your pocket.

How it works

It applies the current slab rates to your taxable income — gross income minus the standard deduction and, for the old regime, your declared deductions — then applies the Section 87A rebate (with new-regime marginal relief) and adds 4% health and education cess. Both regimes are computed side by side so you can compare instantly.

Informational only — not tax advice

This calculator covers the common case: slabs, standard deduction, 87A rebate, and cess. It does not model surcharge on very high incomes, special-rate income such as capital gains, or every exemption. It is for general information only and is not professional tax advice — confirm your liability with a qualified tax professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tax year does this calculator use?
It uses the new-regime slabs for FY 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27): nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% to ₹8 lakh, 10% to ₹12 lakh, 15% to ₹16 lakh, 20% to ₹20 lakh, 25% to ₹24 lakh, and 30% above. The old-regime slabs (nil to ₹2.5 lakh, 5%, 20%, 30%) are unchanged.
Why is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in the new regime?
Because of the enhanced Section 87A rebate. Under the new regime, resident individuals with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh get a rebate that reduces their tax to zero. For salaried people, the ₹75,000 standard deduction pushes that effective tax-free ceiling to about ₹12.75 lakh.
Does the new regime allow deductions like 80C?
No. The new regime offers lower rates and the bigger rebate but disallows most deductions and exemptions such as 80C, 80D, and HRA. Only the standard deduction (for salaried taxpayers) applies. That's why the deductions field in this tool only affects the old-regime result.
Is the result exact?
It's a close estimate. The tool models the slabs, standard deduction, 87A rebate, marginal relief, and 4% cess, but it does not include the surcharge on very high incomes, special-rate income such as capital gains, or every niche exemption. Treat it as informational, not a filed computation.
Can I calculate tax for a previous financial year?
Yes. The tool supports both FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) and FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26), each with its own new-regime slabs and Section 87A rebate limit (₹12 lakh for 2025-26, ₹7 lakh for 2024-25). Pick the year from the dropdown and the slabs update automatically.
Does it account for senior citizens and surcharge?
Yes. Choose your age group to apply the correct old-regime basic exemption — ₹2.5 lakh below 60, ₹3 lakh for senior citizens (60–80), and ₹5 lakh for super seniors (80+). The new regime has no age distinction. For incomes above ₹50 lakh, the tool also adds the applicable surcharge with marginal relief, capping the new-regime surcharge at 25%.
Is this tax advice?
No. This calculator is for general information only and is not a substitute for professional tax advice. Rules change and individual situations vary — confirm your liability with a qualified chartered accountant or tax professional before making decisions.
