Why it Matters

A word target is easy to set and hard to feel progress against — a number alone tells you nothing about pace. Turning that goal into a live percentage, a required daily rate, and a projected finish date makes a looming deadline manageable. Seeing 'on track' instead of a blank page is what keeps writing momentum going.

What this tool does

The Essay Word Target Tracker turns a word-count goal into live, visual progress. Set a target, paste your draft into the live counter, and watch a progress ring, words-remaining figure, required daily pace, and projected finish date update in real time.

How it works

You provide a target word count, optionally a deadline and a daily writing goal, and your current draft. The tool counts the words in your text, works out how many remain, and divides that by the days left to find the pace you need — and by your daily goal to project a finish date. The calculation is a pure function, so the same inputs always produce the same numbers.

Privacy

Everything runs locally in your browser. Your draft, target, and deadline are never uploaded, logged, or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the tracker count words?
It splits your text on whitespace and counts the resulting chunks, the same way most word processors do. Empty space and blank lines don't count. Paste your draft into the live box and the count updates instantly as you write or edit.
How is the required words-per-day calculated?
The tracker takes the words you still need to write and divides them by the number of days left until your deadline, rounding up so you never undershoot. If the deadline is today or has passed, it shows the full remaining count as the amount due now.
How is the estimated finish date worked out?
It divides your words-remaining by your daily writing goal to get the number of days needed, then counts that many days forward from today. Raising your daily goal pulls the finish date earlier; lowering it pushes the date back.
Is my essay uploaded or saved anywhere?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser. Your text, target, and deadline are never uploaded, logged, or stored — refreshing the page clears everything, so your draft stays private.
What does the on-track status mean?
If your daily writing goal meets or beats the pace required to finish by your deadline, the tracker shows 'on track'. If your goal is too low for the time remaining, or the deadline has passed, it warns that you're behind so you can adjust.
