Two systems, one number
Write out the number ten million in two countries and you get two very different-looking strings. Internationally, it’s 10,000,000 — grouped in threes. In India, the same value is 1,00,00,000 — one crore, grouped first in threes and then in twos. Both are correct; they’re just two conventions for placing commas, rooted in two different sets of place-value names.
For anyone working with Indian finance, accounting, or writing, switching between the two is a daily task — and doing it by hand is error-prone, because most software defaults to the international style. The place-value ladder
The Indian system has its own named places, and they’re worth knowing because the commas follow them directly:
- Ones, tens, hundreds — the first three digits from the right
- Thousand — 1,000
- Lakh — 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand)
- Crore — 1,00,00,000 (ten million)
- Arab — 1,00,00,00,000 (one billion)
- Kharab — 1,00,00,00,00,000 (one hundred billion)
Notice the pattern: after the first three digits (up to hundreds), each new named place is two digits further left. That’s the whole rule behind the grouping.
The grouping rule
To format a number the Indian way, group the digits like this:
- Take the rightmost three digits as the first group.
- Then group every two digits after that.
So 12345678 becomes 1,23,45,678. Reading it from the commas: 678 ones, 45 thousand, 23 lakh, 1 crore — “one crore, twenty-three lakh, forty-five thousand, six hundred seventy-eight.” The international system, by contrast, groups in threes throughout: 12,345,678, read as “twelve million, three hundred forty-five thousand, six hundred seventy-eight.”

Lakh and crore in international terms
The two anchors everyone needs to memorise:
- 1 lakh = 100,000 = one hundred thousand
- 1 crore = 10,000,000 = ten million = 100 lakh
From there the conversions are easy. 5 lakh is 500,000. 25 lakh is 2.5 million. 2 crore is 20 million. 100 crore is 1 billion. When an Indian news report says a film earned “₹500 crore,” that’s ₹5 billion. When a salary is quoted as “12 LPA,” that’s ₹12 lakh per annum, or ₹1.2 million.
Abbreviations: L, Cr, and K
In everyday Indian usage, big numbers are abbreviated. ₹1.5 L means 1.5 lakh (₹1,50,000). ₹2.3 Cr means 2.3 crore (₹2,30,00,000). The “K” for thousand (from the international system) is also common, especially online. Numbers into words
Beyond grouping, you often need a number spelled out — for cheques, legal documents, and invoices. “One crore twenty-three lakh forty-five thousand six hundred seventy-eight” leaves no room for the ambiguity a string of digits can carry. Why it matters in practice
Getting the grouping right isn’t just cosmetic:
- Financial reporting. Indian balance sheets, invoices, and government filings use lakh/crore grouping. Mixing in international commas looks unprofessional and can cause misreading.
- Data migration. Numbers exported from international software arrive grouped in threes. Reformatting them to Indian style — or stripping commas before importing — avoids parsing errors.
- Reading large figures fast. “1,23,45,678” instantly reads as “about 1.2 crore” to someone fluent in the system, where “12,345,678” requires a mental conversion.
- Avoiding off-by-a-zero mistakes. When you can see the named places, it’s far easier to catch a misplaced digit than in an undifferentiated string.

Beyond crore: arab, kharab and more
The named places don’t stop at crore. After crore comes arab (1,00,00,00,000 — one billion), then kharab (one hundred billion), nil, padma, and shankh, each two digits further left. You’ll rarely meet these outside very large government budgets or astronomical figures, but the grouping rule is unchanged: three digits on the right, then pairs of two all the way up. So a number like 12,34,56,78,90,123 reads as twelve kharab, thirty-four arab, fifty-six crore, seventy-eight lakh, ninety thousand, one hundred twenty-three. The same two-digit cadence that makes lakh and crore readable scales indefinitely.
A quick conversion reference
For day-to-day work, a handful of equivalences cover almost everything you’ll encounter:
- 1 thousand = 1,000 = 10 hundred
- 1 lakh = 1,00,000 = 100 thousand = 0.1 million
- 10 lakh = 10,00,000 = 1 million
- 1 crore = 1,00,00,000 = 10 million = 100 lakh
- 10 crore = 10,00,00,000 = 100 million
- 100 crore = 1,00,00,00,000 = 1 billion = 1 arab
Keep those six lines in mind and you can translate most Indian figures into international terms in your head. Why software gets it wrong
It’s worth understanding why you keep having to reformat. Most programming languages and spreadsheet defaults assume the international grouping because their number-formatting libraries were built around it. Getting Indian grouping out of them means setting an en-IN locale or writing a custom format string — doable, but easy to forget and easy to get subtly wrong (some implementations even mis-group the crore digits).
