What a one-rep max actually is
Your one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single repetition of an exercise with good form. It’s the standard benchmark of maximal strength and the reference point for almost all serious strength programming. When a program tells you to lift “at 80%”, it means 80% of your 1RM. The trouble is that finding your true 1RM means grinding out an all-out single — which is exhausting, technically risky, and not something you want to do often. How estimation works
The insight behind every 1RM formula is simple: the more reps you can do with a given weight, the lighter that weight is relative to your true max. Why averaging beats any single formula
No single formula is “correct” for everyone — each carries a small bias from the population it was fitted to. Epley tends to read slightly low at high reps; Brzycki breaks down entirely above 36 reps; others sit in between. Just as importantly, the range between the lowest and highest formula tells you how confident to be: a tight range (common at low reps) means the estimate is reliable, while a wide range (common at high reps) is a signal to base your number on a heavier, lower-rep set instead.

Warm up thoroughly with lighter sets before your working weight. Use a spotter or safety pins for heavy bench and squat work. Prioritise form over numbers — a slightly lower estimate with clean technique beats an ego-driven max with a rounded back. And remember that an estimate is a planning tool, not a command: if a prescribed weight feels wrong on the day, adjust it.
