Two modes
Bedtime → Wake time: Enter when you plan to sleep. The calculator adds your fall-asleep delay and suggests three wake times for 4, 5, and 6 complete cycles. Pick the one closest to when you need to be up.
Wake time → Bedtime: Enter your alarm time. The calculator works backwards through 4, 5, and 6 cycles to tell you exactly when to go to sleep so you wake at a natural cycle boundary.
Each suggestion is labelled — optimal (5–6 cycles), good (4–5), or minimum (4) — so you can make an informed trade-off between total sleep and alarm time.
The science of sleep inertia
Waking mid-cycle — especially during deep NREM stage 3 — causes sleep inertia: grogginess that can persist 15–90 minutes. Waking at the end of a cycle, when you’re in light stage 1 or transitioning from REM, produces a far softer wakeup. The Sleep Cycle Calculator puts this principle into practice with a simple input.
