What is a sleep cycle?
A sleep cycle is one complete pass through all sleep stages: NREM stage 1 (light sleep), NREM stage 2 (consolidated sleep), NREM stage 3 (deep/slow-wave sleep), and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. One full cycle takes approximately 90 minutes in healthy adults, though early cycles have more deep sleep and later cycles have more REM.
Why 90 minutes?
