What it counts

• Sentences — split on ., !, and ? followed by whitespace, with abbreviation protection
• Words — whitespace-delimited tokens
• Characters — total, and separately without spaces
• Paragraphs — blocks separated by double line breaks
• Average words per sentence — shown with a reading-level band (Elementary to Graduate)

Abbreviation-safe splitting

Common abbreviations — Mr., Dr., Mrs., St., etc. — are protected from being treated as sentence endings. “Dr. Smith arrived.” counts as one sentence, not two.

Longest and shortest sentence

The tool identifies and displays the longest and shortest detected sentences, making it fast to spot run-ons (long) and fragments (short).

For texts up to 30 sentences, the full detected-sentence list appears for sentence-by-sentence auditing.
