Validate GSTIN Before Issuing an Invoice

Catch mistyped supplier or customer GSTINs with format and checksum validation before you book an invoice or claim ITC.

16 August 2026 By Tools.Town Team 5 min read

The problem

A single swapped character in a supplier GSTIN creates invoice mismatches and ITC headaches later. Spreadsheet eyes miss Mod-36 checksum errors that a validator catches in a second.

Who this is for

Freelancers, small businesses, and accountants cleaning vendor masters before billing.

Steps

  1. Copy the GSTIN from the vendor’s certificate or prior invoice.
  2. Open GST Number Validator.
  3. Confirm length, structure, state code, and checksum all pass.
  4. Note the extracted PAN/state if you are cross-checking records.
  5. Only then paste into Invoice Generator or your accounting tool.
  6. For PAN-only checks, use PAN Validator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a passing checksum mean the GSTIN is active?

No. Format/checksum success only proves the string could be valid. Confirm registration status on official portals when required.

Is the GSTIN uploaded?

No. Validation runs in your browser.
