Why it Matters

Torque — the rotational equivalent of force — is measured in different units depending on the engineering tradition. Automotive specs use Newton-metres (Nm) in metric countries and pound-force feet (lbf·ft) in the US. Servo motors and small mechanisms use mN·m or kgf·cm. Bolt tightening specs may be in lbf·in. Torque: the rotational force

Torque (also called moment of force) is what makes things spin. An engine produces torque at the crankshaft. A wrench applies torque to a bolt. A servo motor outputs torque to drive a joint. The SI unit is the Newton-metre (N·m), but the US uses pound-force feet (lbf·ft) for automotive and structural applications.
