Why thumbnail URLs exist
Every public YouTube video exposes still images on Google’s CDN at predictable paths: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/VARIANT.jpg. No API key is required — you only need the 11-character video ID from the watch URL.
The standard variants are:
| Variant | Typical size | Best for |
|---|---|---|
maxresdefault | 1280×720 | Hero images, design mockups |
sddefault | 640×480 | Blog cards, medium previews |
hqdefault | 480×360 | Lists and sidebars |
mqdefault | 320×180 | Small widgets |
default | 120×90 | Tiny placeholders |
Not every video has every size. If maxresdefault 404s, fall back to sddefault or hqdefault.
The fast way
Paste your link into the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader. It parses the ID locally, previews all available sizes, and lets you download with one click. Nothing is uploaded to Tools.Town.
Tips for creators
- A/B testing — archive your own thumbnails alongside analytics screenshots.
- Aspect ratio — thumbnails are 16:9; pair with the Aspect Ratio Calculator when resizing for other platforms.
- Embedding — if you need a player instead of a still, use the YouTube Embed Generator.
