The question a world clock answers
“What time is it there?” sounds simple until you are asking it about four places at once — a colleague in New York, a client in London, a supplier in Dubai and your own desk in Delhi. Each answer depends on a different UTC offset, some of those offsets shift twice a year for daylight saving, and at certain hours the date is different too. Offsets: the foundation
Every time zone is defined as a number of hours and minutes ahead of or behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). London in winter is UTC+00:00; New York is UTC-05:00; India is UTC+05:30; Nepal is the famously odd UTC+05:45. The offset is the single most important fact about a zone, because once you know it you can translate any instant from one place to another by simple addition.
What trips people up is that offsets are not all whole hours. Half-hour zones (India, parts of Australia) and even quarter-hour zones (Nepal, the Chatham Islands) exist because political and solar boundaries do not line up neatly. A world clock that shows the offset in the standard ±HH:MM notation makes these visible, so you are never caught out assuming a city is “about five hours ahead” when it is really five and a half. Daylight saving: the moving target
Offsets would be easy if they never changed. They do. Roughly a quarter of the world’s population observes daylight saving time (DST), shifting their clocks forward an hour in spring and back in autumn. While that shift is in effect, the zone’s offset changes — New York moves from UTC-05:00 (EST) to UTC-04:00 (EDT), and its abbreviation changes too.
Crucially, the southern hemisphere is out of phase with the northern one: when it is summer in New York it is winter in Sydney, so their DST periods never overlap. This is why a city’s gap from you is not a fixed number you can memorise — it can change by an hour twice a year, and the change can happen on a different date in each country. The total spread of offsets around the globe exceeds 24 hours — from UTC-12 to UTC+14 — so at any given instant two calendar days are always in play somewhere.
A good world clock makes this explicit. That single label prevents the classic scheduling error: setting a call for “Tuesday 9 a.m.” without realising that, for half your participants, that Tuesday is a different day than the one on your own calendar. Reading a clock card
Each card on the board carries four pieces of information, and they work together:
- Local time — the headline, ticking once per second.
- Local date — the weekday and calendar date in that city, which may differ from yours.
- UTC offset — in
±HH:MMform, the unambiguous anchor that survives DST changes. - Abbreviation — IST, EDT, CET and friends, handy in conversation but ambiguous on their own (CST alone means three different zones), which is why the full identifier matters.
Together these answer not just “what time is it there?” but “is it a reasonable hour, and is it even the same day?” — the two questions that actually determine whether you should hit send on an invite.
Using a board to schedule across borders
The practical payoff of a world clock is lead time and tact. A few patterns people rely on:
Finding a humane overlap. Lay your team’s cities side by side and look for the window where everyone is within working hours. With New York, London and Bangalore on screen, you can see at a glance that mid-afternoon London is morning in New York and evening in Bangalore — a tight but workable slot.
Avoiding the 3 a.m. invite. Before sending a calendar invite, glance at the recipient’s card. If their local time is the small hours, pick another slot. This single habit prevents most “sorry, that was the middle of the night for me” replies.
Calling family abroad. Drop in a relative’s city and you instantly know whether it is a polite hour to ring. No more waking someone at dawn because you forgot they were eight hours behind.
