Why a formula beats a flat number
A 50 kg person at rest in a cool climate and a 90 kg person running daily in a hot climate are not both well served by “eight glasses”. The IOM formula scales water needs to body mass because larger bodies have more cells, more blood volume, and greater thermoregulatory demand. Activity and climate modifiers then adjust upward from that baseline to reflect real-world sweat losses — which can reach 1–2 litres per hour during intense exercise in heat.
