Why it Matters

Many salaried employees overpay tax because they don't claim HRA correctly or don't know their exact exemption. The three-leg rule trips up most people — it is always the minimum of three amounts, not just 50% of salary or actual HRA. This calculator makes the logic transparent and gives you the exact number to declare in your ITR.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the HRA exemption rule?
Under Section 10(13A), HRA exemption = minimum of: (1) actual HRA received, (2) 50%/40% of basic salary (metro/non-metro), (3) rent paid minus 10% of basic salary.
Which cities are Metro for HRA purposes?
Only four cities qualify as metro for HRA: Mumbai, Delhi (including NCR), Chennai, and Kolkata. All other cities, including Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune, are non-metro (40% rule).
What if I pay rent to a family member?
You can claim HRA for rent paid to parents (but not a spouse). The rent payment must be genuine — the recipient must show rental income in their ITR.
Do I need rent receipts?
If HRA exemption exceeds ₹1 lakh per year (₹8,333/month), you must submit the landlord's PAN along with rent receipts to your employer.
What if my HRA exemption is zero?
This happens when your rent paid minus 10% of basic is zero or negative — meaning you pay less rent than 10% of your basic salary. Consider paying higher rent or renegotiating your salary structure.
